About the Fish
The Fish is a student-run magazine of Christian thought and opinion. Originally conceived by Crystal Moy and Emily Capo in 2006, The Fish was founded by Emily and Bridget O'Kane in Spring 2007. We gratefully acknowledge the contributions of the University of Chicago Student Government Finance Committee and the Augustine Project.
Our Purpose
Christian journals and magazines have become increasingly polarized. Some have taken an historical-critical approach - treating the Bible just like any other text while others have taken an historical-grammatical approach - treating the Bible unlike any other text. This has led to a divide between writers: some contribute more on matters of the heart and soul, while others focus solely to the life of the mind. We seek to make a virtue of this problem by presenting and encouraging both within the same magazine, while at the same time addressing the difficulties inherent in such an undertaking - especially within the University of Chicago community.
Our inspiration comes from Matthew 22:36-39: Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law? Jesus replied: Love the Lord our God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment, and the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself (NIV).
The contributions in The Fish represent a diversity of doctrine (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox), as well as a diversity of interpretive methodology (critical, allegorical, contextual) in an attempt to love our neighbor as ourselves. We seek to love God with our heart by having a heart for the community and for justice, with our soul by exhibiting visual artwork and a humor section (so as not to take ourselves too seriously), and with our mind by including literature reviews and scholarly articles.
We hope that our readers find The Fish to be not only a valuable and thought provoking read, but also an opportunity to engage in constructive discourse with members of the University of Chicago community.
